An Incredible Story of Courage and Overcoming

Elishaba Doerksen was the oldest of fifteen children born to ex-hippies Robert and Kurina Hale—also known as Papa Pilgrim and Country Rose. Elishaba grew up in a dilapidated 340-square-foot log cabin in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of New Mexico, isolated from civilization by a fundamentalist father intent on keeping his large family cloistered from a godless world. When she was nineteen, Papa Pilgrim began taking liberties with Elishaba in unimaginable ways and beating her—and her siblings—when he judged them to be “rebellious.”

The horrific sexual and physical abuse continued after the family moved to a remote valley in the Alaska wilderness. After ten years of terrifying mistreatment, Elishaba gathered her courage to make a run for it on a snowmobile. What happens next is the basis for a powerful, dramatic story about perseverance, faith, and redemption, as well as forgiveness.

This is the first time that Elishaba has told her side of a story that garnered national attention with major articles in the Washington Post, NPR, and Outside magazine as well as a significant buzz on social media. She needed time to heal, but now she’s ready to tell the world what it was like living with Papa Pilgrim—and how she overcame some of the worst trauma a daughter can experience at the hands of a father.

Reviews for Out of the Wilderness

"Out of the Wilderness is easily the most shocking book I have ever read...after discovering the miraculous work of redemption that God did in Elishaba’s life, you’ll also offer a prayer of thanks for this incredibly courageous woman and the transforming peace that is available to us all."

-Joshua Cooley, New York Times Bestselling author

Elishaba is a fearless writer. She looks straight into her father's heart of black and somehow transmutes decades of darkness and betrayal into a bursting dawn. She is one of the crown jewels of Alaska by gifting us with more than a fascinating read. Out of the Wilderness catches the imagination with the sharp simplicity wielded so well by survivors. The surprise for me was with the elegance and grace which she finished her story. Elishaba is one of God's own creations not made to fail, but made to show others that victory over the longest night of hell is real. Veni, vidi, vici.

-Jen James

I can so relate to the religious abuse you received. It is so confusing and manipulating, and led to suicide in one of my siblings. Thank you for being willing to open up and share. It really touched my heart!

-Heidi Kopke

The most detailed book of truths of horror that we have ever read. It took incredible courage not only to survive a life of unspeakable abuse but to then speak out & share her story to encourage others!!! She is remarkable & her book should be a movie!!

I have never in my life read a better book. I could not put it down. There are no words to describe her story, escape and survival. Thank you so much for being so brave and sharing your story. You are an amazing woman.
